Olympic silver medallist Shane Rose dominated the podium at the 2015 Australian International Three Day Event, taking out first and second place in the Adelaide CCI 4*, bringing them one step closer to his goal of representing Australia at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Leading into Sunday's ATCO Showjumping decider Rose was already ranked first and second after dominant performances in the dressage and cross country phases. He also had a five penalty lead over New Zealand rider Clarke Johnstone but with Rio on the horizon it was important that he also produce clear rounds in the showjumping.
Riding Virgil his round in the showjumping went according to plan and the pair finished on their dressage score of 50.80. Last into the arena was Rose’s horse CP Qualified and the pair knocked one fence which added four penalties to their score but it didn’t affect their lead and the pair rode to victory with a score of 49.30.
“I knew Clarke would be really hard to beat and we have about six Aussie guys that are here that I knew would be up there,” said Rose. “I think both horses have performed very well and it would have been great to jump clear on Qualified but to run first and second in this field is what I was hoping I could do. “Before the event I said I would be pretty disappointed if I didn’t finish in the top four. I have very competitive horses and I felt if I did a good job that we’d be close. “Coming down here I openly said here that this is where I wanted to qualify and get selected for Rio.”
The Adelaide CCI4* was an important event for Australian Eventing Riders and none more so than Rose who knows what it takes to make it to the Olympic Games.
“I don’t think (the road is) any easier after this weekend, it’s just clearer and this is certainly the way I wanted to try and get there. “All those tentative plans I put in place on where I’m going to go and how I’m going to try and get to Rio I can hopefully act on and get there with everything firing and put ourselves in a position when we can win.” “I know I’m competitive against anyone in the world on those two horses but I have to make sure on dressage day that I do a better job than what I did on Friday. “We have eight months or so to get that right but I’m confident we’ll be able to polish that off,” he said.
Johnstone’s clear Showjumping round helped him to solidify third position with a score of 54.10, while Olympic silver medallist Sonja Johnson (Parkiarrup Illicit Liaison) finished fourth after she too produced a clear jumping round and finished with 59.40 penalties.

history of this event.
In 2006, the Adelaide International Horse Trials celebrated 10 years in the Adelaide Parklands.
This international event was born in the South Australian township of Gawler, 40 kilometers north of Adelaide in 1954.
Because of its success, Gawler was chosen as the site of the World Three Day Event Championship in 1986 which was won by UK rider, Virginia Leng on "Priceless". The field comprised the best riders in the word including Mark Todd from New Zealand, and Bruce Davidson from the United States among others.
The biannual Trans Tasman Championship which was last held in Adelaide in 2005 was instituted in 1985 as a lead up event to the World Championship of 1986. It is shared between Australia and New Zealand, with a young riders Trans Tasman event held in the between years.
The inaugural "Adelaide" horse trials was staged at Victoria Park and the East Parklands in November 1997 at CCI*** level and was upgraded to the highest level- CCI**** in 1999, making it one of only four such events held annually in the world and the only such event to be staged in the Southern Hemisphere.
The event is managed by Adelaide Horse Trials Management Inc and an Equestrian Committee comprising volunteers and past competitors, many of who have been involved since the 1986 World Championship.

The winner in 2005 was Megan Jones on Kirby Park Irish Jester. Two weeks previous one of her first horses, Kirby Park Irish Hallmark, died tragically after a spider bite. Triumph after adversity. Megan bought Paddy as a four year old when she was 18. Over a period of 10 years they competed together. In 2001 and 2002 they placed 3rd and 4th at the Adelaide four star.
There are only five other annual events in the world with the equivalent status, Badminton and Burghley in the United Kingdom and Lexington, Kentucky in the United States of America amongst them.
The Adelaide International Horse Trials is unique in being held in the center of a busy CBD which brings world class competition right into the heart of the city.
We invite you to enjoy our beautiful city parklands, gourmet food and wine, great shopping and of course, international equestrian competition at the 2011 Australian International 3 Day Event in Adelaide.
