Croftcnoc Fingal

Fingal 2008Fiona had her first canter on Fingal. I wasn't there, (which I am forever glad). She was having a lesson with our trainer, (I was picking up something for the trainer) and my best friend was supervising them. They tell me Fiona gave herself a bit of a fright and there was no steering involved, just holding on to the horn on the western saddle, and griping the reins. She was up one end of the arena when they cantered back to the trainer. It was planed, (I think because I wasn't there). After the first go they did it again. Fiona keeps asking me if I wont be a the next lesson. Kids.... Fiona is my youngest, and I don’t want to be around to see her cantering. I think Fingal will be to strong really for her. She is fine walking and jogging, (has the best jog, better than some of the QH’s around). I could be wrong, its just Fiona is my baby.

Unfortunately Fingal has since injured herself, we wish her a speedy recovery and best wishes to the Collins family.

Croftcnoc Danielle

Danille lessonDanielle has a new owner in Victoria.

Danielle is going really well.  We had our third lesson today and she is a quick learner (or so I am told).
She is at Tim’s, my instructor, for the next 2 weeks and I will have 3 or 4 lessons each week to get things going. Neither of us will know what hit us! She has settled in and looks pretty happy.

Coriander at her first Show

Croftcnoc Coriander attended her first competition, the National Buckskin Society 2008 Spring show. We had a great day, Corrie was so quiet and well behaved. I took three ponies and two kids so the day was very busy running between classes. I managed to miss only one class between all three ponies.

Coriander at her first show Sept 08Results as follows:

6th Led novice female
3rd Led mare over 14hh
2nd Buckskin, owned and bred by exhibitor
1st Dun Factor

Donald 1 year 2007Croftcnoc Donald

I thought you might be interested in this picture of Donald I took this morning while I was cleaning his paddock. He was being most helpful hovering over the poo bin and sticking his head in it! As you can see he’s very furry. Donald is a quiet and friendly fellow now approx. 15 hands ( I’m not very good at height but the bin gives the scale)  The current plan is to have him broken in next March at 2 and a half.

Austin & Spud 2Austin 2Croftcnoc Austin

Austin has been sold to Sally Francis at Tooradin Estate in Victoria. He has now been broken in by David Simons and going well. Sally has been riding him every day out around the property with other horses. She is very happy with him.

Equitana Asia Pacific November 2008Equitana 2008

Equitana has been and gone for another 2yrs and what a horsey extravaganza it was. Four days of fantastic shopping, heaps of free demonstrations and information sessions and great nightly entertainment.

The Highland stand was located in the Breeders Village and the first 2 days were extremely busy with lost of visitors and people looking at Croftcnoc Chloe who was on display. Unfortunately the weather turned foul on Friday evening and Saturday dawned wet and miserable. Our booth and stall were soaked, the tarps on the portable stables had leaked, stock was damaged and it was freezing cold. The Breed parade was cancelled due to the rain but we still managed to have a few on lookers. Ballinton Islay Sky with her filly foal at foot were on display and attracted lots of attention. The foal was so well behaved, she was amazing.

Sunday faired a bit better and we also did and eight minute demonstration in one of the indoor arena's with Sky and her foal. In all it was a great opportunity to showcase the Highland to the equine world and I think we managed to educated a few people on the wonderful qualities of these ponies.

Campbell wins costume award - from Raylee

Been really busy but thought I would take a moment to send you pics of Campbell and I from our Annual Performance and Fun Day. We won the open costume class and I was quite pleased with our efforts - a nice trophy presented by our Mayor.

I made a drape with felted thistles on it, used the Campbell tartan as my basis. He had a tinny set of bagpipes on his left side brow band and a sporran made by my sister for him. And I wore my antique amber brooch at the neck.

MONTY TURNS 21

BARRYMOOR MONTROSE
Mouse Dun Gelding 14hh
SIRE: BARRYMOOR GRAND FINAL
DAM: GIPSY MELODY OF TURIN HILL (imp)

Monty as he is known was purchased at six months old from Mrs Heather Ronald from Barrymoor Highland Stud. He started his show career as a yearling and continued on for many more. He is a pony with a super quiet nature and temperament and his colour was popular with many who saw him.

After an extremely successful show career in hand and under saddle, I joined the Horse Riding Clubs Association o Victoria and started to compete in all Olympic disciplined including jumping, dressage and horse trials. He excelled in all especially the One Day Events as his rider was not so brave and he made the job much easier.

We climbed up the ranks of HRCAV starting at level four dressage and after just a few years reached and competed successfully at level one, which in those days was the highest level to achieve.

Monty is now retired and we use him as a baby sitter for our young highland ponies and foals. He is a very special pony and will be a treasured family member for many years to come.

A TALE OF SURVIVAL by Sue Jarman Queensland.

CROFTCNOC CLOVER

Clover arrived on Thursday afternoon after 3 days on the truck. She was abnormally thirsty but apart from that seemed ok. I checked her at regular intervals, the last at 10 o'clock that night. She was a bit restless but I put that down to her long journey. At about 5.30 the next morning I checked her and she was down! We couldn't get her up and I flew down and rang the vet.

CloverBy the time he arrived we had got her up, thinking it was colic and had her walking slowly around the yard. It didn't take long for our vet to pick up the real problem. She had pneumonia...temp 41.5, heart rate 120!!! and respiratory rate twice the normal. She was critically ill and I could tell our vet was not hopeful of the outcome. He gave her 3 different antibiotics plus Finidyne and she was also given fluids. I've never slept with a horse before! On the Friday night we were too scared to leave her in case she lay down and didn't have the strength to get up. She was so weak and we had noticed that day that lying down made her breathing much, much worse. So we never left her that first night. I sat out with her till 1.30 and then my husband did the next shift till 5.30 and every time she wanted to lie down we stopped her.

Amazingly by the next day her temp had returned to normal and she had responded so incredibly well to the treatment. By the Saturday morning she was starting to nibble the tiniest bits of grass and by Sunday was eating and drinking small amounts. Her appetite has well and truly returned now. She has also amazed my vet. We all thought we would lose her on that first awful day.

The worst thing about all of this, is that it was probably preventable. The truck driver had had her tied so short in the truck and she was on the truck for sooooo long. This is apparently a classic way that horses can develop pneumonia. They absolutely have to be able to get their head down to keep their airways clear. I haven't tackled the truck driver yet, I need to be quite calm before I do, as I don't want him to think I'm a hysterical woman, as it's vital that he listens and changes the way he ties them. I don't want any horse or owner to have to go through what Clover and I have in the past few days.

But Clover is obviously a fighter, her vital forces have returned and she is once again a picture of health. I know what happened to her would have killed most horses. I don't want to think too much about the foal, we will just have to see whether she keeps it and if it is born ok. If it is we'll have to call it "Miracle"! (Hmmmm another margarine, we already have a MacGregor and a Flora!)

Scottish Heritage Day 2008

The Dandenong Agricultural Society once again held its Scottish Heritage Day on Sunday 25th May. There was a great turnout of Highland with entries in every class. BARASTOC HORSE OF THE YEAR SHOW 17TH FEBRUARY 2008

Highlands had a fantastic showing at the recent Barastoc Horse of the Year show which runs over 4 days. QUEENSLAND NEWS - News on Croftcnoc Fingal

We have been taking her down to the local arena every Friday afternoon for the last month with Islay's new horse.  Fingal has been so good....Islay and Fiona get dropped off after school by a friend who has children the same age.  We use Fingal for the kids to play on.  Islay rides her around first to make sure she is ok, then we put the children on.  These are total beginner children.  They cant get Fingal to move, and it doesn't matter how hard they try,  Islay's get on, and Fingal goes beautifully (Islay turns 12 this year, and she is very small)....The children's mother (who hasn't ridden in years, (she comes from a village in the UK)) has a ride on her as well.  When Cindy tries to get her into a canter, she just can’t, or it takes what seems to be a lot of effort.  In the end we put Islay back on to get Fingal to canter so she doesn't get away with being stubborn.  I think Fingal just knows they cant ride, and if she can get away with not moving she will. Fingal is so used to the children, she gets dragged around with one on her back and the other one trying to lead her.  She is also really good outside the arena.  There is a nice area to take her for a trail ride.  She is very calm, and likes to go out.  The only draw back that we are having is the Qld Itch.  This I believe makes her a bit of a grump......

NEWS FROM SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Mac is very well thanks........been playing some ground games in the round yard with him. Can't take him anywhere with the horse flu although it's not in SA yet....and hope it never will be!    He is hilarious really......in some ways too smart for his own good. He has picked up on so many things SOOO quickly.......

I am having so much fun with him Anna!
We are following the Steve Brady method. I don’t know whether you are aware of his methods but I find them to have a great amount of common sense and promote a real understanding and fantastic foundations for being ridden later.

I have not done much with him yet because we have been caught up with family matters.  I think he is still growing! He has gone bum high again. So just when I think I might start breaking him in....he shoots up. I intend to do a lot with this horse and enjoy him for the rest of his life, so I do not want to do things before he is ready. You did say they are late developers, and he certainly looks more mature...but I think he is growing again.

NEWS FROM ACT

Sarah McAndrew has purchased Croftcnoc Finella to join her other two mares, she will be broken in over the next few months. Sarah’s other ponies Akira and Bridie  have settled into their new home well.

MEMBERS NEWS

Just to let you know that Donald has settled in well to his new home. He and Jasmine are no longer sharing a paddock. There was a bit of calling to begin with but now they both seem to have settled. Donald has been into the big stable block a couple of times, funnily though, he doesn’t seem to want to go back to his own paddock afterwards. He seems to enjoy being where the action is! I’m really happy with the way he’s going. I’d forgotten how very basic the lessons were when I first got Gracie!

Jasmine and Donald broke into the front paddock full of old retired horses after about a week of seclusion in their own paddock. Donald is now in a private yard and Molly is staying with the old dears. She has settled in more now and I am going to get some help with her from a professional horse handler.

Lesley McKay is have lots of fun with Croftcnoc Chloe and will be taking her to Riding club and a few dressage days.

Melinda Hobson is pleased with her new Highland Croftcnoc Glencoe a yearling gelding. Melinda is planning to use him to ride with her children and their ponies in the future.
