Course Designer confirmed for MITSUBISHI ADELAIDE INTERNATIONAL Horse Trials
Adelaide Horse Trials Management Inc., managers of the Mitsubishi Adelaide International Horse Trials, is pleased to announce the 2004 course will again be designed by Mike Etherington-Smith from UK.
“As an event sanctioned by The Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) we are delighted to continue our involvement with internationally renowned course designer Mike Etherington-Smith, whose involvement will encourage the world’s premier riders to attend ”, said David Lindh, Chairman of Adelaide Horse Trials Management Inc. “We are delighted to welcome Mike to Adelaide for the third consecutive year for this world class event”
Mike has a wealth of experience in the equestrian world as Event Director of Blenheim and Chatsworth Horse Trials in the UK. He is renowned for his work as Course Designer at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, as a Board Director of British Eventing and as an FEI International Course Designer and Technical Delegate since 1986.
Mike will be in Adelaide this month for preliminary course walks and planning and is glad to return. Mike is working with Technical Delegate, Neil Clinton to make this year’s course exciting and challenging for horses, riders and spectators alike.
“It is always a privilege to be able to design courses at the highest level and Adelaide presents a unique challenge running through the city park lands.” says Mike. “The aim is to provide interesting and visually attractive courses which will make the riders think whilst at the same time encourage their horses to show their abilities.”
As the only inner city equestrian event of its type in the world, the Mitsubishi Adelaide International Horse Trials has become one of the State’s most popular events in just five years.
The most significant change this year is that the competitions will be running in the same format as the 2004 Olympic Games and also the World Championships in 2006 whereby there are no Roads & Tracks or Steeplechase phases. This means that the early part of the course will run through the middle of the racecourse.
As usual, the three-day eventing action will cover dressage, showjumping and cross-country. Held in Adelaide’s East Park Lands, it’s both convenient for locals and ideal for interstate and international guests who can experience the best the City has to offer in a short walk from the course.
